Flickasbord, Volume 107

Fifteen months has turned into fourteen months and three weeks, and 263 overall guaranteed Flickuum spots still need to be filled by the New Year’s Day 2026 deadline. Let’s begin.

First up, it took me exactly three years [start date of February 5, 2021] to find the two centerpieces of the The Flickuum Project, but I found them via A] The Bounce Back being Nadine Velazquez’s crowning achievement, and B] In The Heights resonating with me more than John Wick: Chapter 4 did during late-March 2023, especially since the former of those two 2020s movies went from solid to spectacular via the presence of the dynamic Melissa Barrera. Furthermore, both of those movies are so neck-and-neck with one another that they are more like future 1A and future 1B than future 1 and future 2 of The Flickuum rankings, although there isn’t any number listing format that officially creates both a 1A ranking and 1B ranking, thus eventual respective 1 and 2 rankings will have to do. And that’s not quite all for this paragraph because in addition, looking back at the journey to this most recent February 5 constantly makes me about the eventuality of enshrining both movies in the rankings to the point that I know now what the 2,501st overall guaranteed Flickuum movie will be. And as to what that movie will, well it be “Dream Scenario” simply because dream as in its title. However, there are/will be two contingencies in place for the Kristoffer Borgli-directed movie, with them being that it must pass its assessment and must allow 230 other movies to get overall guaranteed Flickuum spots 2,269 through 2,500, as it will be assessed at some point this calendar year. Stay tuned.

Next up, speaking of those 230 other movies vying for overall guaranteed Flickuum spots, that number is actually 200, as 30 movies have Flickuum spots reserved for them. And as to why its 30, well A] I was able to find a seller via Etsy to get a physical copy of “My Penguin Friend” from and B] The Demi Moore movie “The Substance” is available for pre-order [July 1, 2025 release date] via a website called Zavvi, so best worst-case scenario is that I get hard copy confirmation for the latter sometime during summer 2025. And as for the former, well I’m confident that that physical copy will have perfect playability when I test it out with my region free Blu-ray player. So, given my even more relaxed attitude about obtaining movies via hard copy, those two movies will be eligible to compete along with those other 28 movies for graduation to Tier 5 as soon as possible. Stay tuned, as selection protocols will vary from graduation to graduation.

230 and 200 just became 229 and 199, respectively, as I have decided to take a flier on “The Invitation”. And as to why I’m taking a flier on it, well besides writing about it as filler in this entry, well A] I want to see more of Nathalie Emmanuel’s movies since I’ve only seen “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” and the fantastic “Arthur The King” and B] It could be a pleasant surprise like “Tarot” was back in May. And yes, stay tuned for that as well.

And finally, 229 and 199 will become 225 and 195, respectively, as four 2024/2025 movies will be added to Tier 9 and for various reasons at that. To find out which four movies have been to that tier and why, simply view the chart below:

MovieWhy it’s been added to Tier 9
Never Let GoIt has vibes similar to A Quiet Place: Day One and the dog doesn’t die.
SinnersThis movie could fill the void left by the 2020 version of “The Invisible Man”, in terms of its eerie grit.
A Minecraft MovieThis movie could have the same success as The Super Mario Bros. Movie did in 2023.
Dog ManA movie where a humanoid crime-fighting police dog that makes dog noises is totally deserving of an assessment.

Well, after all the assessment/re-assessment roster gymnastics, I still have 69 open assessment/re-assessment spots, although that number is really 64, due to the five movies that currently reside in Tier 10. Still, 64 is an amount that offers more leeway for movies looking to avoid that arduous final 99 waiting period. I’m looking at you, Quicksilver!

Until the next time.
